First and foremost, we thank you for your interest in Clemson Crew. It is with the help of those such as yourself that we continue our tradition of success dating back to 1988.
Clemson Crew is a co-ed club team, open to any and all full time students. We are able to make use of people of all shapes, sizes, and athletic ability. It is also important to note that no previous rowing experience is necessary (95% of the team had no prior rowing experience before joining the team).
The success of any one boat (as well as the team as a whole) is determined by a number of different individuals holding different roles. We encourage you to take a moment and look at some of the following important positions within the team for you to determine what you're most likely to be interested in. If you have any questions about anything, direct them to our recruiting board member.

RowersServing as the driving force of any boat, rowers are tasked with the difficult job of working with as many as seven other rowers to move a 60 foot long racing shell faster than the competition. Rowing is as mental as it is physical, as many races are decided by the toughness of each crew along with their athletic and technical abilities. As a rower, you may expect to be worked into great shape, compete against schools all over the country, and play a very direct role in the team's success. If this interests you, we encourage you to read more about rowing. |

CoxswainsIf rowers provide the boat's muscle, coxswains bring the brains. A coxswain is responsible for steering his or her boat, overseeing many areas of training on and off the water, and making strategic decisions during races. In a sport often decided by fractions of seconds, a skilled cox is able to push his rowers to the fullest of their capabilities, make technical corrections, provide encouragement, meanwhile steering around other boats. Coxswains are typically short and light, making rowing one of a select number of sports where short and tall people both hold critical roles. Coxswains are a lineup's "fearless leader", the captain, the in-boat coach. Take a moment to learn more about coxing. |
