Clemson Crew is a club rowing team at Clemson University, and is operated and directed entirely by its student members. The team was founded in 1988 on Lake Hartwell by a small, devoted group of students, rapidly expanding to be one of the largest organizations on campus. From then on, Clemson Crew has enjoyed its place as a competitive south-eastern club. For an account of the team's early years, see our History According to Chud.
Current and past teams have been comprised of people of all majors, experience levels, and backgrounds. The vast majority of rowers had no prior experience, and many competed in their first serious athletic sport by joining the team.
Many majors are represented in any given season, with members being anything from Electrical Engineering to Business. Most students have full course loads, jobs, and are involved in other student organizations alongside crew.
The coaching duties are headed up by a paid head coach, who has a number of volunteer coaches underneath to carry out training the various squads. Many of the coaches are former team members.
Depending on the season, our races are either 5,000 meter head races (in the Fall), or 2,000 meter sprints (in the Spring). Our races happen as far away as Boston (Head of the Charles), and as close as on our own boat house (Clemson Sprints). Students have the opportunity to travel along the south-east, facing familiar opponents from schools in the ACC, SEC, and other conferences.
Clemson Crew competes against teams primarily in the south-east. Some of our more common opponents include (but are not limited to):
The growing body of Clemson Crew alumni continue to provide the support and encouragement needed to ensure the team's continued success. Rowers as far removed as fifteen years continue to watch and cheer the team on to victory.
